Advantages and Disadvantages of Science

Types of sciences:

First of all, we should talk about sciences (plural) since there are different scientific disciplines that are grouped into different groups:

  • Natural Sciences. Such as Biology or Health Sciences.
  • Sciences.
  • Social Sciences. Such as History or Economics.
  • Formal Sciences. Such as logic or mathematics.

In the following article we are going to show a series of advantages and disadvantages of science in general.

Advantages of science:

  • Medical advances. Such as, for example, the invention of penicillin (1928) or the discovery of DNA (1869).
  • Scientific advantages.
  • Improvements in everyday life. Household appliances that allow us to preserve food or wash clothes more easily have been made possible by science.
  • Transportation. The development of communication routes and transportation is directly related to the development of science.
  • Knowledge. It allows us to better understand the natural environment and the human being itself.

Disadvantages of science:

  • Arming. Science is closely related to the military field, making possible creations as destructive as biological or nuclear weapons.
  • Pollution. The development of large industries has severely damaged the environment.
  • Substitution of the human. On some occasions, technological advances displace the workforce, generating unemployment and unrest in society.
  • Addiction. Developments in communications technology have led to new addictions such as smartphone addiction.
