Advantages and disadvantages of NATURAL GAS

Natural gas is a fossil fuel found naturally in the environment. Although its discovery dates back two thousand years, until the beginning of the 19th century it could not be used efficiently because the appropriate technology did not exist. In recent decades its popularity has increased because it is a low-polluting energy and has a very good relationship between its calorific value and its price. In addition, it is a very versatile energy source since it can be used for a large number of functions. It is mainly consumed in homes, providing heating or hot water, although it can also be used as fuel for vehicles.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Natural Gas

Currently in Spain there are a large number of distribution networks that exceed even 35,000 kilometers and its consumption is widespread throughout the world. Approximately 2350 million cubic meters are consumed per year and it is estimated that there are natural gas reserves exceeding 160,000 million cubic meters.

Despite the fact that there are still large reserves of this energy source, the most reasonable thing to do is to continue researching into clean energies that will allow us to maintain a sustainable model in the long term and not continue to depend on non-renewable energies.

Advantages of natural gas

  • It is very economical to extract
  • It is a much cleaner fossil fuel than others.
  • It guarantees a continuous supply as it does not depend on external factors.
  • It is a very versatile fuel, it can be used as a fuel for vehicles, hot water or heating.

Disadvantages of natural gas

  • It forces you to depend as a third country on the country where it is produced.
  • It is a non-renewable energy, so in the long term its dependence is not viable.
  • It is flammable and toxic so it can become very dangerous.
